We held in 1893 that the phrase “party to an action,” as used in the statute (at that time 1878 G. S. c. 73, § 8), means a party to the issue, Bowers v. Schuler, 54 Minn. 99, 103 , and we have several times since held that the statute does not render a nominal party incompetent to testify.
